I just created my account yesterday because feddit.de is so broken at this point that I can't use it anymore. At first everything worked flawlessly, but today I couldn't load my subscribed and local feed from Eternity and Voyager and now in the web version it loads really slow.

Is anyone else having this problem?

There is a (new) community without mods: https://lemmings.world/c/investiranje There may be more but I haven't looked. I doubt that the admin wants their instance to be filled up with modless communities that do not contain any posts. I therefore suggest that for new communities to be made, people may have to get explicit approval from an admin. Or as an alternative, perhaps remove c's that have been moderator-less for a certain time?

Posting this from lemmy.world because I wasn't able to from lemmings.world. I also wasn't able to upvote comments, and thumbnails of newer posts are appearing blank.

Is there a reason why all the local community avatars appear to be missing (and maybe the banners too)? Can they be restored, do they need to be re-uploaded, or is there another problem?

You may have noticed the current spamwave, I've deployed an automod that should ban almost all the spam within a minute, but if you notice any leftovers, do report them, please.

Sadly, because lemmings.world is not the target of the abuse, our removals and bans don't federate to other instances, so this is only a local solution. But at least our users don't see (as much of) the spam.

Some of their communities don't seem to be refreshing since they updated their instance a couple of days ago.. is there an issue with the federation?

The server has been upgraded and has more RAM now, so everything should be a little bit faster. I've also upgraded 3rd party frontends.

Side note, I don't really know where are Lemmings.world users from, so if you left your preferred server maintenance time in your timezone in the comments, I'd appreciate it.

Most of the time, lemmings.world is just slow and failing to load. Showing errors most of the time. Also, posting posts is incredibly slower than normal. When I compare the lemmings.world with other rooms, they are much faster.

Is this happening only to me or to everyone?

You may remember the post about defederating with kbin.social, well, we're federating again.

Sadly, the spam situation did not improve, but I didn't want to deny our users the possibility of interacting with their users solely because their platform has technical issues.

This means a little more work for me, but I'll be following what other instance admins are doing and just removing their most popular communities (which are the target of the spam), meaning you still won't be able to interact with those, but at least you'll be able to interact with the users in other communities.

We're getting quite a few new users, so I thought it might be a great time to write some quick-start guide. This post will stay pinned for a week or so, afterwards it will be linked from the sidebar.

Right now you're on Lemmy, a federated platform for discussion and link aggregation.

What's the federation thing you're reading about everywhere?

That's a fancy name for a protocol that makes it possible for all Lemmy servers to interact with each other - that means you can read content from other servers here on lemmings.world.

Does that mean that I can log in to any server with my account?

Nope, your account is tied to the server you created it on. But that doesn't restrict you from commenting on posts on different servers, creating posts in communities on different servers, or subscribing to communities on different servers. In fact, that's the whole point of federated platforms!

> Note that each server first needs to know that a community exists before it can fetch its posts. That happens when someone from the server subscribes to the community for the first time. If no one subscribed to a particular community, you won't see it in the "All" feed. But hey, you can always be the pioneer and be the first to subscribe.

How do I find communities?

You can always use the search at the top. You can also use the various communities for sharing communities:

• [email protected] - general community for asking where to find a community
• [email protected] - a community where mods post about a new community they have created

And you can use https://lemmyverse.net/communities - a brilliant service which indexes all known Lemmy communities regardless of what server they're on.

How do I link to other communities on Lemmy?

You may have noticed already, but the format is !community_name@lemmy_server.tld. For example [email protected]. This is similar to using r/subreddit_name on Reddit. In the same way, you can mention users like this: @[email protected]. Note that this will also notify the user that they have been mentioned.

> Some frontends don't render the user link correctly, sadly that's the case for the official one. In that case you have to use a little bit of markdown to help: [@[email protected]](/u/[email protected]) which will be rendered like this: @[email protected]. Note that if you only want to tag someone, just writing @[email protected] is enough, the markdown thing is only if you want to make sure the user link is clickable for all users.

Frontends? What's that?

Aside from the official Lemmy frontend at https://lemmings.world there are also alternative frontends written by different people. All those frontends display the same data, they just have different ways to go about it. A sad fact remains that all of them look better than the official one, so I advise you to use a different frontend.

On Lemmings.world you can find these frontends:

• https://p.lemmings.world - a frontend called Photon, another great and popular option
• https://old.lemmings.world - a frontend inspired by old Reddit

Mobile apps

There are many, many apps for your phone, whether you have an Android or an iPhone. There's even a separate community for them: [email protected]. My personal favorite is Eternity ([email protected]) for Android.

NSFW

If you're here for that juicy NSFW, there are two Lemmy servers for that (lemmynsfw.com, pornlemmy.com) and pretty much all porn communities are there. Due to the federated nature, you can of course subscribe to their communities from lemmings.world. If, on the other hand, you don't want to see any NSFW, in your account settings you can check that you don't want to see any NSFW. If you see any untagged NSFW, please report it.

Bots

When you're at the settings page, you may notice two bot related settings: Bot Account and Show Bot Accounts. The first one marks your own account as a bot and the other can be used to disable seeing all bot posts and comments on Lemmy. It's completely up to you, but there are many useful ones. I run three such bots:

• @[email protected] - just mention the bot in a comment and it will reply to it.
• @[email protected] - automatically creates TL;DR for linked articles from supported sites
• @[email protected] - many people use URLs (like https://lemmings.world/c/wwdits) instead of the community name to link them, which doesn't work for people on different instances - if someone from a different instance clicks the link, they won't be logged in to their account and can't comment. This bot replies with the corrected link

While you can disable all bots in the settings, in my opinion it's better to block them individually - you might for example dislike ChatGPT but find automatic TL;DRs useful, so you can simply just block the ChatGPT bot.

Glossary

Defederation

You'll most likely hear this term sooner or later. It means that one instance's admin(s) decide that they don't want to see the content of another instance. The reason might be arbitrary, but on well-meaning instances (like this one) it's usually because of some serious reasons: hate speech, child sexual abuse material (CSAM), spamming other instances and so on. You can check the code of conduct this instance uses to defederate with other instances. We use Fediseer to manage our blocklist, you may view the reason for each defederation there.

Fediverse

You might hear this term around. Lemmy isn't the only platform that uses the federated protocol (called ActivityPub) for federation with others. There are for example Mastodon (similar to Twitter), Kbin (has sections similar to both Twitter and Reddit), but also Bookwyrm (Goodreads alternative) and so on. These all services are collectively called Fediverse. Some of them can interact with each other (like Lemmy and Kbin), some of them can interact only a little (like Mastodon with Lemmy, but not Lemmy with Mastodon) and some of them not at alll (like Lemmy and Bookwyrm). Over time the integration with other Fediverse services will get better and better.

It will be updated to 0.18.5 which fixes some stuff only relevant to moderation. I'll be updating installed apps as well. I don't expect any hiccups, should take around 10 minutes with no downtime (well, few seconds to be fair).

I'm looking for one or two individuals who are willing to help with moderating this instance. What does that entail?

• resolving reports by users
• moderating stuff that you stumble upon and doesn't conform to our rules
• strictly following our rules
• strictly following our code of conduct
  • particularly this rule might be hard to follow for some: The admins will not censor something just because we don’t like it - that means that ideologies you don't agree with are fine, as long as they follow other rules (like no hate speech). That means that promoting communism is fine even though you don't agree with it, saying holocaust didn't happen is not fine.

What you get in return? Nothing. Seriously, this is for you only if you'd like to help your fellow lemmings feel safer. If I implement a donation system and there is some surplus after the servers are paid for, we'll be splitting it equally, but don't expect much (if anything) out of it.

Important: If you do this long enough, you will see and read stuff that you don't like. Like transphobia, homophobia, misogyny, racism, people telling you to go kill yourself (or saying the same to others). You'll also most likely see child sexual abuse material (aka child porn) eventually. If you feel like any of the things is too much for you, don't apply.

I've created a chat for our members, if you want to chat! The link is also in the instance sidebar. Don't expect anything crazy (as we're kinda small instance), but feel free to come and chat if you want to!

Currently pretty much every report I have to take care of is from kbin.social so I've decided I'll be defederating until it gets better.

The main pain point is that their moderation actions don't federate, meaning that if they ban a user, remove a post or take any moderator action, our instance doesn't get the memo and still happily shows the content. This is unlike between Lemmy instances where if a moderator of a community removes a post, it's removed for all federated instances. Or if an admin bans a user, it's banned for all instances.

So as much as I don't like it, it's getting tiring and we will be defederating until Kbin has support for federating moderation actions and until the situation with kbin.social improves.

I'll leave this post pinned for 2 days before defederating if you want to discuss, but unless someone wants to volunteer to remove the kbin.social spam themselves, I'll be defederating because I don't want to do that anymore.

So, emails are now required when registering new account. That's to avoid the rampant spam that's going around Lemmy right now.

Nothing changes for existing users, if you don't have an email, you don't have to add one. And if a new user registers and wants me to remove their email after registration, feel free to write me a PM.

I've (hopefully temporarily) defederated from feddit.jp, spammers took a liking in that instance. If the moderation issue on their side is resolved, we'll be federating again.

We unfortunately had an outage caused by running out of free space, it has been fixed and shouldn't happen again. Sorry for the trouble.

As the title says, should we defederate from them? They are generally very spammy and most of Lemmy agrees that they don't contribute to the discussion in a meaningful way. At the same time they don't break any of the rules that would cause me to defederate from them, so I thought I'd ask you, the instance users, what do you want.

Please comment what you think, this post will stay pinned for two days and afterwards we will either defederate or not.

P.S. If you ever feel like some instance would be better defederated from, do let me know! I'll either defederate straight away if they break any of the rules, or create a post like this to let our users vote.

For the usual reasons - instance supported racism, homophobia and other stuff like that, namely:

• racism against Jews
• telling people to kill themselves
• calling people removeds

As usual, this wasn't an action of an individual, but something that the instance is all about.

The instance has been updated with the following changes:

• The pictures backend has been upgraded to the latest version and the storage was moved to a so-called object storage which should be cheaper than standard server storage. It also means we have unlimited\* storage, yaay!
• Photon has been updated to latest version
• Mlmym has been updated to latest version

\* The storage is unlimited as long as I have unlimited amount of money (which I don't) and as long as there are enough servers on Earth to store the data and ultimately if there's enough matter in the universe to even create more servers. But it's at least virtually unlimited.

The Photon frontend has been added at https://p.lemmings.world. As per their claim, they're the first frontend with all the feature the official UI has!

The reason is the same - personal attacks against a user of our instance using very unpleasant language. In all cases this is officially supported by the instance and not an action of an individual. Anyway, here are the instances:

Most instances have a Kofi or something equivalent where you can give some money to help the instance admins. But I didn't see any links like that while poking around in the side bars.

Does this instance have something like that and I'm missing it? Or are the costs of running this instance not at a point where that kind of assistance is necessary? I don't have a lot of money but appreciate the work that goes into maintenance of an instance, so I like to toss a few bucks here and there to the ones I use when I can.

The instance has defederated from 3 sites, namely:

• rammy(.)site - the admin abandoned the instance and it's no longer moderated which leads to a lot of racist and nazi stuff, which is illegal and hate speech
• detroitriotcity(.)com - site that promotes and accepts racism (illegal, hate speech), loli (illegal to distribute, which IMO I would be doing if my instance replicated the images, but I'm not a lawyer)
• eientei(.)org - promotes and accepts racism, which is illegal and hate speech

Hi, I'm Dee.

I was browsing through the various instances to join up with because I was tired of all the downtime with lemmy.world and I wanted to start using Lemmy as it was intended (spreading accounts out among more instances). That, and Beehaw hasn't been quite as engaging since defederation with lemmy.world and other large instances (which is why I went back to the lemmy.world account in the first place). I get why they defederated and I support their decision, it just was an overall negative impact for me in my Beehaw experience since I was in so many other communities outside of Beehaw.

This instance seemed chill, it blocks Threads and exploding heads so that's a great first impression. There's a few more instances I'd like to see added to the block list but that's a good enough start for me to get comfy here. The low user count has made everything just run so much quicker than with lemmy.world and I can still enjoy the same communities.

Happy to have found this place that appears to be here for the long haul and I'm looking forward to getting to know the local instance community more!

Edit: Sorry for triggering the snowflakes in the comments and for them feeling the need to provide substantial proof for why so many other instances defederate from them by default.

It looks like this instance and communities are undiscoverable from kbin. I've seen mention of this before - when android moved from lemmy.world to lemdro.id it had the same problem. Unfortunately I can't find the announcement post with the comment in. Can this be fixed please?
