I hate the capslock thing. I sometimes feel like I’m the only person who regularly uses capslock (for C macro names and SQL when programming, but also for typing acronyms).
I don’t mind the function key thing. Even from memory I can say that in a browser F5 = refresh and F11 = fullscreen. But kids probably are less likely to know those these days so a label could be helpful.
Seems like a puzzle platformer with dress-up and other "comfy" features. Could be interesting.
CrossCode. It's a 2D ARPG with a good story and well-designed world with puzzles, exploration, and combat.
In one episode of GameChanger, the host mentions a few others that they weren’t aware of when the intro text was written: Taskmaster (which is awesome) and Ellen’s Game of Games.
I know for sure that there is a mastodon client for Emacs, but of course that uses a different protocol and wouldn’t work for lemmy: https://codeberg.org/martianh/mastodon.el
Oh, the non-citizen voting stuff. Yeah, that's kinda weird. It does seem like every instance so far has been for local or specifically school-board elections. Ballotpedia has a comprehensive article on it: https://ballotpedia.org/Laws_permitting_noncitizens_to_vote_in_the_United_States
I think my personal viewpoint is as follows:
-
It is probably reasonable for legal resident aliens who have lived in a school district for 30 days and who have a child in the public school system to vote in school board elections.
-
I don't know what to think about legal resident aliens being able to vote in local municipal elections. I live in NYC (which attempted to enable this option, but it was struck down in court as violating the state constitution) and this would significantly alter the voting landscape of the city. I'll have to think about it more.
-
I don't think that undocumented resident aliens should be able to vote in any elections.
-
I don't think that legal or undocumented resident aliens should be able to vote in state elections.
And of course the right to vote in federal elections has been explicitly reserved to US citizens by congress.
I did some research into this out of curiosity. It turns out that the 30 day requirement for local and state elections was decided by the Supreme Court in Dunn v. Blumstein (1972) as an application of the Equal Protection clause of the 14th Amendment, on the basis that states already allowed long-time residents to register to vote up to 30 days before an election and that restricting new residents from doing so was arbitrary.
That seems like pretty solid precedent and I would expect that this rule will never change, barring exceptional Supreme Court shenanigans.

Good point, fixed

Growing Support for Gay Marriage: Changed Minds and Changing Demographics (USA) (2013)
Overview The rise in support for same-sex marriage over the past decade is among the largest changes in opinion on any policy issue over this time period.
> The rise in support for same-sex marriage over the past decade is among the largest changes in opinion on any policy issue over this time period. A new national survey finds that much of the shift is attributable to the arrival of a large cohort of young adults – the Millennial generation – who are far more open to gay rights than previous generations. Equally important, however, is that 14% of all Americans – and 28% of gay marriage supporters – say they have changed their minds on this issue in favor of gay marriage.
As someone who has two packs of that in his pantry right now, that stuff is awesome.
They actually did do something similar to this but with beer. They extracted ancient yeast DNA from 45mya that was preserved in amber and used it to brew beer.

Unfortunately no longer available, which is quite the shame since I really want to try it lol.
I just gave PlantUML + the C4 Plugin a try and generally liked it, thank you for the rec!
It seems like a good tool although it inherits all the joys and pains of automatic graph layout.
I think I’ll keep it in my arsenal for detailed diagrams that can handle being a little aesthetically wonky.
I hadn’t heard of C4 before and it seems like a solid idea.
Everything is Everything: Reviews of bagel shops all around NYC
'Everything is Everything' is the ultimate guide to bagels in NYC. Over 200 bagels reviewed in all five boroughs, with photos, interactive maps and advanced metrics. Presented by Highley Varlet.
The Target app is the best that I’ve seen for customers. It won’t plan your route, but you can search for items and it will tell you the aisle, location within the aisle, and stock level for any item at your local store.
My spiciest anime hot take is that the Netflix adaption of Death Note was actually pretty good.
The problem was that anyone who liked the anime would hate it and vice versa, so it had no audience.
But if you disliked the anime, then I highly recommend checking out the Netflix adaption.
It answers the question “what if Light were cringe”.

It's great when simple tools let you extend them like this. It may be kinda hacky sometimes but oftentimes a small, tightly-scoped extension that you develop for yourself can give you a lot of value.

Has anyone ever tried mulled coffee?
Out of the whopping four seasonal beverages we introduced in our cafes this holiday season, one rose to become something of a sleeper hit among our customers. Meet our Mulled Coffee, a sweet and zingy concoction of cranberry juice infused with aromatic mulling spices, then blended with fresh filter ...
I know that it’s the middle of summer (northern hemisphere). I know that even the thought of adding fruit juice and mulling spices to coffee is probably horrifying. I do not expect it to taste good. And yet, I had a thought about it and found that it seems to be a thing and so… has anyone tried it?

The Octopath Traveler II + Various Daylife bundle on Steam is currently cheaper than just buying Octopath Traveler II
I noticed this and thought it was funny. I wonder if someone at Square Enix is trying to juice sales numbers for Various Daylife.
