  • I know there's no point dwelling, but there's still a lingering feeling of annoyance over the inconsistency of officiating. I heard someone say 2/3 of our reds were deserved.

Sure, and can anybody point to any other team who has been punished as harshly as we were for "time wasting"? Ridiculous opinion.

I find it difficult to argue too strongly against the red. We can try and rationalise it and all of those are valid points, but it felt like a red initially (maybe I'm just consitioned to that being an Arsenal supporter xD). I also think I'd want the same result if it were reversed.

But, I guess was the yellow a clear and obvious error in the referees initial judgement for VAR to step in and have the decision overturned? Probably not.

I do find it frustrating to be called delusional or biased when challenging these big moment decisions. Of course I want the best outcome for the team I support, but It feels so dismissive and that the criticism is unfounded, when it is...

    • We literally had the same event be a yellow with Chelsea the day after, I'm not buying it being a red, honestly.

The problem for me is even if by rules it might be a red, it's not common sense a red. Is it likely to be a goal? No. So why is it a red card? I think DOGSO only makes sense if it's like, actually somewhat likely a goal. White was running back and they were half the pitch away from the goal. The tackle wasn't dangerous, either. Is that enough to justify sending someone off for 60 minutes and ruining the entire game? I think no, and I think most people would agree.

      • And yeah, also, "clear and obvious"??

      • I agree with all of your points. It guess it feels worse since the refs initial decision was yellow and then VAR stepped in to tell him to look at it again.

First it doesn't look like a clear and obvious error to overturn. Ad you pointed out, there are so many variables that couød have changed the outcome at that distance. And then by VAR stepping in, they've either decided it should be red and the onfield decision was wrong or they've sowed enough doubt in the onfield refs mind that he feels he needs to reverse it and issue red.

I'd be curious to know the rationale of VAR and Robert Jones on why he thought his initial ruling was wrong. He obviously saw it and decided it was a yellow offence. What else happened that he thought he missed?

As you mentioned it also happened in the Chelsea v Liverpool game.

I'm just tired of talking about refereeing decisions. It's akin to yelling into my mailbox about the mailperson deciding that I missed my delivery when I was home the whole time. But alas I do because yelling into my mailbox is the only outlet I have, lol
