Juvenile continental least gecko (Sphaerodactylus continentalis), June 2023

This is the smallest vertebrate I've ever seen. I had trouble picking it up over fears of squishing it (it was indoors and trapped). Unfortunately, the tail fell off in the process, but that's what tails do. It seemed impossibly small. Lago de Yojo, Honduras.

  • Ooh wow, I am very jealous! I want to go explore Central American forests!

    • These guys are a lot harder to find (and catch) while sifting through leaf litter, lol. A lot of areas in these countries are pretty accessible, though Spanish is a plus.

      • I found a very similar gecko (Sphaerodactylus glaucus) by the road in Quintana Roo several years ago. I tried to catch it and I thought that I succeeded because I could feel him jumping in between my hands. But when I opened my hands to take a good look I realized that the gecko had managed to jump away and left a very excited tail behind to trick me, so I couldn't get a nice photo :(
