Can we get a Matrix Space for Pawb.social

Can we get a Matrix Space for Pawb.social

I know that we have a telegram chat for announcements but I think it would also be a good idea to also have a matrix space where we can also get announcements and maybe even also chat and get support.

One of the reasons I think we should is that not everyone has Telegram and it requires a phone number to sign up to, but a lot of people have Matrix and even if they don't it's easy to sign up to. Another reason is that telegram isn't a great platform due to it being a centralized corporate platform which is now allowing/forcing ads on it, some of which for very sketchy blockchain services, which obviously isn't great and is a pretty big reason people would want to avoid it.

(I posted this from #Mastodon so it could reach further and also so I could mention people).

  • Should the announcements be specifically on a Matrix instance hosted by Pawb, or could it be hosted on the de facto matrix.org? (Disclaimer: I have nothing to do with the upkeep of either. I just happen to run my own Matrix instance.)

    • @frosty I'm usually all for self-hosting but here I think that the best thing is for it to be on a de-facto server like Matrix.org that way it'll be available in case our servers here are offline or not working for whatever reason. A self-hosted matrix server might not be available in such an outage, and therefore wouldn't be able to provide during the outage (which is important for receiving updates about the situation).

    • @frosty @Draconic_NEO A room does not belong to a specific server: unlike XMPP, a room is copied onto every server that has at least 1 member in it. So as long as there is at least one member from matrix.org, the room is technically on matrix.org.

If you're talking about room aliases, then you can have many aliases on different servers. The main alias is mostly cosmetic though (as long as that server is reliable).

      • @austin @frosty Oh that's really handy and helps when it comes to mitigating outages.

Though I guess in this situation the biggest issue isn't that the room wouldn't be available (since it's copied and exists elsewhere) but that the accounts of the room operators (which are probably on the same server as that room) wouldn't be available to deliver messages and updates during an outage affecting the self-hosted home server. Which is why it would be best to have something critical like an announcements and support channels on a more multi-purpose server like matrix.org as opposed to a self hosted one, that way the updates can be posted there if pawb.social servers aren't working, since their accounts will be hosted on Matrix.org as opposed to their own server.

        • Well, the more you all talk about this, the better Matrix sounds!

I think that any extra ways to keep up on 'server happening' here would be neat, since not everyone is comfortable with things like telegram, X, etc etc.

        • @Draconic_NEO @frosty Well, you can have multiple accounts on the same power level.

matrix.org is not that good for long-term usage due to performance issues (it's slow) and, well, centralisation. You can see https://servers.joinmatrix.org for other choices (most of them are quite stable).
