What is 196?

What does "rule" mean? Is there any common theme to what is posted there? Is it humor? Is it a massive Reddit inside joke?

There rule is that you have to post something before you leave. I'm not sure why it's called 196 though...
- I believe there was formerly a subreddit called 195, and 196 is the successor of that. Idk why the previous one was called 195.
  
  Because the founders were living in room 195 in some college dorm. When the sub became too big they closed it.
