The high idle power bug with the chiplet RDNA3 GPU's has been plaguing AMD since the damn things were released.
I, too, ended up experiencing desktop idle TBP's of 100W or more, which is absolutely ridiculous.
I discovered that in my system, it occurs in this configuration:
Two monitors connected- one via DP, one via HDMI.
The HDMI monitor is set to HDR mode in Window Display settings.
Disabling HDR, or disconnecting the second monitor, both fix the bug. Disabling HDR sucks if you have a monitor that supports it, but yknow... saving 80W when watching youtube or writing a document? Worth it.
Only way I get normalish power numbers is when I set both my 4k displays to 60hz then I idle in the teens. That's when hdr off. When I was messing with custom resolutions I noticed that setting a lower bit rate did improve things so it's possible it has something to do with that. Hoping 23.8.1 helps when that comes.
Yeah it's like there's some specific level of "idle" GPU load or certain portion of the GPU chiplets that bumps the required operational power up to stupid amounts for even the tiniest bit of idle work. Maybe the driver is waking up too much of the GPU with certain display setups, or maybe it's an architectural limitation that we'll never be free of.
It'll be great in the winter when I want my room warm, but damn if it's not going to suck foe the rest of the summer!
