I'm trying to imagine how I would feel if someone tried to assassinate me. I'm stuck on a complete inability to imagine anyone caring enough about what I am doing to make an attempt.

Same here. I'd rather live an uncontroversial life of plain living and good acts and be missed by only a handful of people than gestures in Trump's general direction stir up a hornets nest of cultish populism and intolerance and be missed by a gunman.
