  • So in preparation for the Matildas match tonight I've decided i might splurge a little on some comfort/junk food tonight.

I'm thinking maybe chips and a bottle of soft drink for tonight. It was also suggested that maybe I do a hot chocolate as well.

Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions, preferably not too expensive.

    • Seconding soda water + cordial. Soda water bottles are under a dollar, and Bickfords cordial lasts ages.

Open the soda water bottle and drink a little bit of it, to make room, then add the cordial to the bottle. Voila!

Healthier too I reckon, as it's mostly angry water with a bit of flavour and sugar lol but honestly, a bottle of Coke is unbeatable.

Treat yourself, friend, you deserve it!!

      • You can always add a bit of grog to the soft drink to kill the germs.

      • I'll have to have a look at that and see how it goes. In truth I am saving for something next month where i'll be able to treat myself to something a little bit more substantial.

Been doing occasionally the homebrand/Aldi fizzy drinks as well so they're good enough for me.

    • Hot dogs. Get them from the deli section at the supermarket. Get the rolls from the bakery. Cheap as. Or just get cocktail franks.

      • Cocktail frankfurts and tomato sauce.

This is a brilliant idea for snacking!

Also looks like Woolies raised the price of cocktail frankfurts to 3 dollars for their homebrand packs now :(

        • Bastards. Get them from the deli counter. Much cheaper.

          • Really? I always thought the deli was much more expensive than the homebrand 500g packs.

            • deli is always cheaper

              • Deli normally cheaper for fresh chicken too (eg chicken breasts/thighs/pieces). And bacon. And ..... everything?

            • $9 a kilo at Coles. I don't know about Woolies because I'd have to travel 5 minutes extra and I don't want to.

              • Oh ok, thanks for checking.

I think from memory Aldi is 2.29 for 500g and right now at Woolies it's $3 for 500g which is cheaper.

    • Soda water and cordials often cheaper. Soda water by itself is actually pretty good too! But the Aldi cola is not a bad substitute for real coke.

      • I'll have a look and see how the combo works, never done soda water and cordial and might be a good one if I can get cordial that I like.

Yup, I don't mind the aldi versions of the fizzy drinks either.

        • I'm partial to the Aldi Westcliff Fruit Cocktail cordial. I add a bit to the glass, then add the soda water.

Depending on how much cordial you put in, it goes from tasting like those mineral waters with 5% juice (my preference) all the way up to a full blown Passiona.

NB: I don't like the Aldi Raspberry Apple or Lemon cordial. For lemon (like a lemon squash), I like the Diet Rite Lemon with soda. Diet Rite Lemon, Lime & Orange is good too.

I think those cordials are about $3.50 a bottle, though. So if you just want a couple of bottles to drink for one night, you're better off picking a couple of bottles of the homebrand fizzies.

I also didn't mind the Woolies Diet Ginger Ale $1.10/bottle, but haven't had that for quite a while. Lime goes well with it, but the real limes are often very expensive. You can pick up a bottle of Lime Juice for $1 and give it a little squirt to add some more flavour.

          • For some reason I keep missing the cordials at Aldi, I'll really need to remember for the next time I'm there to see what they have.

        • Lots of nice cordials around. Buderim ginger cordial. There are fancy schmancy elderflower cordials too. The Bickfords range is huge. My all time favorite is the Bickfords Lemon Lime & Bitters. I used to be a fan of Schweppes Lime cordial but I don't like the taste now - too fake sweetener and nothing like what it used to be 20 years ago.
You can make your own cordial by blitzing up a punnet of raspberries or blueberries with their own weight in water plus half to one third their weight in sugar (or a bit less), mix in a teaspoon of citric and/or tartaric acid. Bottle and keep in the fridge for up to a week. If it ferments, you now have alcoholic cordial .... Or go to YT for a recipie for raspberry shrub which is a vinegar based cordial and very nice indeed and possibly quite healthy. PS. Grenadine is a fancy very sweet pomegranate cordial. Kinda gluey, but essential for a proper tequila sunrise.

    • I'm doing burritos tonight, I have all the fillings ready.

might get some chips and stuff from aldi for special, eh. For special is key, not everyday. 😊

    • hmmm. yeah, i will get a bag of rice cakes and a jar of low salt vegemite.
