- www.bbc.co.uk Police warning after two lynx illegally released in Highlands
The alarm was raised when the wild cats were spotted in the Drumguish area, near to Kingussie.

New show offers behind-the-scenes look at Scottish wildcat project
Some more broadcasting news for us this week. The other story I liked was that the Edinburgh Filmhouse is commencing work this week to bring it back into use, yay! But the dochmentary:
> Part one of Wildcats: Cait ann an Cunnart will air in Gaelic with English subtitles, on BBC ALBA and BBC iPlayer at 9pm on Wednesday, with part two set to air on January 15. Click here to watch live or on demand.
- www.bbc.co.uk News at Seven: BBC Scotland launches new programme
The television news programme will be screened for the first time on Monday evening.
Hard to see this bucking the live news in decline trend. And it still isn't the 6 o'clock slot. And it's also competing against the excellent c4 news now. And it's still got the same anti-scottish government editorial team which doesn't hold the UK government to the same level of scrutiny.
But it is a better move than 'The Nine' and good to see them try again

Incoming snow

Scottish Highlands and Islands Web gallery - https://www.henni.photo/Highlands-and-Islands/Highlands-and-Islands-Images #Photography #Scotland #Torridon Photo by Paul.
It's Sunday and there's only snow in the news. Which isn't news in January in Scotland. So here's a great photo from Paul Henni. The sky being darker than the mountains and the loch make this a great composition, almost b&w before being shot like that
- www.bbc.co.uk Courier accused of abandoning villages in Christmas run-up
Residents of Borders villages say hundreds of Christmas parcels have gone missing from courier Evri.
Pretty despicable that the universal service obligation hasn't been extended to the big couriers imo. Evri should be getting heavily fined, but instead these villagers will have to muck around with each retailer, who then have to get evri to refund/return stuff

Seeing as there's some excitement about public domain day, here's some already publicly accessible data I stumbled across today!

One transport expert tells the BBC it might be better to run the new CalMac ferry on diesel.
The very saga continues! Maybe next round of ferries will be smaller like the people requested
- www.dailyrecord.co.uk Thousands of Scots nurses 'with Long Covid left destitute begging for handouts'
Nurses who quit their careers due to illness they got caring for others are pleading for Long Covid to be treated as an industrial injury so they don't have to beg for handouts.
(Article from 2023, but worthwhile share I think because the problem hasn’t magically gone away)

- www.theguardian.com Stressed out trees helping charities restore valuable aspen forests

The lost art of the family album. Print people, the only way they'll last
- news.stv.tv Flying to London from Edinburgh cheaper than train to Glasgow, research finds
Peak fares returned to ScotRail services in September after a Government pilot scheme ended.
Yup, why a 40 minute service costs so much is baffling. So is the costs to fly EDI to LDN however, this is climate debt in action
- news.stv.tv The Scotsman owner National World agrees to £65.1m takeover
It has given its backing to an all-cash offer worth 23p a share from its largest shareholder, Media Concierge.
Still not in Scottish hands. A real shame, but could be interesting to see what an Irish owner does editorially
- news.stv.tv 'Double-jobbing' ban: Holyrood votes to block MSPs sitting as MPs
It comes in the wake of a row involving Stephen Flynn, who announced he would be running for Holyrood while remaining an MP.
Just a shame Douglas Ross wasn't forced to resign. Sensible change, now let's see other jobs added. Elected and well paid: no second jobs period!
- news.stv.tv FM urged to make 100-mile journey branded 'terrifying' by pregnant women
Women in Caithness have been forced to make the three-hour journey to access healthcare in Inverness since 2016.
Pregnant cows aren't allowed to travel this far. These calls have been persistent since 2016, good for the LibDems to keep banging that drum.

Borders village 'heart ripped out' by battery site plans
www.bbc.co.uk Borders village 'heart ripped out' by battery site plansA total of six storage compounds are planned for the fields around a rural village near Coldstream.
No mention from anyone under 50 in this article. Tories, gammon, and the worst of the borders on display here. Nevermind the decarbonisation this could bring, or changes being proposed to power pricing meaning they could be paying next to zero in the future, or jobs to the area - which is struggling. No no, some containers in a field is going to really destroy the place they say
- www.bbc.co.uk Bill to jail bosses of major polluters set to be introduced in Scotland
The Ecocide Prevention Bill would impose harsh penalties on executives responsible for major environmental damage.
Not sure what bar of major is in the bill, or what level of proof we shall need. But I expect Scottish Water to be the first investigated! (Scottish water are government owned and thus a very silly thing to do for those outwith Scotland)
- www.bbc.co.uk Dog walkers land Broughton woodland purchase support

- www.bbc.co.uk Five key takeaways from the Scottish Budget
Scrapping the two-child cap and changes to tax thresholds are among plans for the next financial year.
Well, hard to see anything bad about this. Potentially LD and SGP backing too. Labour getting not even a slice of cold shoulder: learn that Holyrood doesn't play your politiking games Sarwar! Work with the incumbent instead of against the SG ffs, you then get some policies passed. And conservatives, fucking do something other than whinge. I'd be embarrassed to represent your constituents if I were any of you

- news.stv.tv Teachers threaten formal dispute over ‘unacceptable’ class contact time
The Teachers’ Panel of the Scottish Negotiating Committee for Teachers (SNCT) said high-class contact time is contributing to 'intolerable levels of workload experienced by all in the professions'.
Anyone who knows a teacher knows that class contact time is expensive. It seems for every hour in class, another hour of prep/marking/dealing-with-fallout is needed. More teachers is the answer, more money is the problem. With councils struggling, will Holyrood raise taxes or see if Reeves will break her fiscal rules to raise more cash? As teachers ain't gonna take much more, and the costs of teachers striking is astronomical to the economy
- news.stv.tv Talks to resume on proposed return of Scotland to mainland Europe ferry link
