    Lemmy + Federation

    What is Lemmy?

Lemmy is an open-source federated link aggregator and discussion platform. It is designed as a decentralized alternative to platforms like Reddit, allowing users to create communities, share links, and engage in discussions.

    How does Lemmy work?

Lemmy works on a federated model, meaning that multiple instances (servers) host their own communities, and these instances can communicate with each other. Users can subscribe to communities hosted on different instances and interact with each other across the federation.

    What are communities on Lemmy?

Communities on Lemmy are similar to subreddits on Reddit. They are dedicated spaces for specific topics or interests, where users can share links, create discussions, and engage with like-minded individuals.

How does federation work on Lemmy?

Federation on Lemmy allows instances to connect and share content. When you subscribe to a community on a different instance, you can see and interact with the posts and discussions from that community. Instances communicate with each other using the ActivityPub protocol.

Is there a mobile app for Lemmy?

For Android there is Jerboa app. Google F-Droid

For iOS there is the Mlem app.

    Subscribing to communities

If you can't find a desired community in the community browser, that's no guarantee it doesn't exist on another instance. To check other instances for communities, check the Feddit.de Community Browser.

If you for example would like to subscribe to Gaming community on the Beehaw instance the syntax would be [email protected]

Simply use the search page and search for [email protected], if it's not found initially, try again after a few seconds.

Open the community and click subscribe!
